Lefkas vs Corfu — Which Ionian Charter Base Is Right for You?
Most first-time Ionian charterers ask the same question: from where? The two main bases are Lefkada (D-Marin Lefkas Marina) and Corfu (Gouvia Marina). We charter from both. Here is the honest comparison.
At a glance
| Lefkas (D-Marin) | Corfu (Gouvia) | |
|---|---|---|
| Closest international airport | Preveza (PVK), 25 min | Corfu (CFU), 15 min |
| Vibe | Charter capital, busy, lots of services | Resort island, more touristic, slower pace |
| Marina size | 620 berths | 1,100 berths |
| Number of catamarans we operate from here | 12 | 5 |
| Best for | First-timers, families, short legs | Longer cruisers, Albania day-trip, Paxos focus |
| Typical 7-day loop | Lefkada → Meganisi → Ithaca → Kefalonia | Corfu → Paxos → Antipaxos → north Lefkada |
| Wind | More predictable thermals 11:00–18:00 | Open to channel, occasionally stronger gusts |
| Anchorages within 15 nm | 14+ named bays | 8 named bays |
Choose Lefkas if…
- You want short sailing legs. From Lefkas, every interesting anchorage is within 1.5 hours under sail. The Inner Ionian (Meganisi, Kalamos, Kastos) is a maze of small bays you can hop between for breakfast, lunch and dinner without crossing more than 6 nautical miles.
- It's your first charter and you want gentle conditions. The thermal breeze is reliable and predictable; nothing surprises you.
- You want dinner ashore most nights. Lefkas Town, Nidri, Sivota, Vasiliki, Fiskardo (Kefalonia), Vathy (Ithaca) all offer good tavernas within easy reach.
- You're flying into Athens then transferring. Lefkada is a 4-hour drive from Athens or a 1-hour flight to Preveza.
Our Lefkas-based fleet includes: Aqua Star (Lagoon 50), Queen Annezia (Lagoon 42), Chios (Lagoon 40), Deep Blue (Lagoon 39), Dos Hermanos (Lagoon 46), Spiritus (Lagoon 46), Nostos (Astrea 42) and several more.
Choose Corfu if…
- You want a richer cultural day-1 (Corfu Old Town is a UNESCO heritage site — Venetian fortresses, French arcades, English shopping streets).
- You want to spend 3+ days in Paxos — Corfu is the natural launch pad. Lakka, Gaios, Mongonisi.
- You're considering an Albania day-trip to Saranda or the Blue Eye spring (passport required, captain handles paperwork).
- You want a bigger marina with more chandlery, more provisioning options, more spare-parts shops.
- You're flying in from the UK/Northern Europe — direct flights to CFU are more frequent and cheaper than to PVK.
Our Corfu-based fleet: Achilles (Lagoon 46), Deva (Lagoon 40), Thalasea (Lagoon 46) and partner-managed boats added each season.
When the choice doesn't matter
If you're booking a two-week charter, it almost doesn't matter which base you pick — you can sail Corfu → south Ionian → back, or Lefkas → north Ionian → south Ionian, and see most of what each has to offer. The difference is which day-1 experience you want.
A pragmatic recommendation
- Family of 4–6, first charter, 7 days → Lefkas. Fewer choices, less stress, more swim-stops.
- Couple, 7 days, want to mix sailing and culture → Corfu. Spend day 1 ashore, sail south on day 2.
- 8 friends, 10 days, want everything → Lefkas, sail south to Kefalonia and Zakynthos, return.
- Photographers / filmmakers → Corfu (better light on the medieval architecture in the morning).
Booking either
Tell us your dates and group size, and we'll send a 2-page proposal: the boats available from each base, the suggested itinerary, and the realistic total cost (read our 2026 cost guide for what that includes).
